How many days are there between two dates?
The date calculator is two tools in one.
- Count days between (Days Between): pick a start date and an end date, and the screen will show both the total day count and a weeks-and-days breakdown.
- Add or subtract dates (Add / Subtract): pick a date, choose Add or Subtract, type the number of days, and the new date appears.
Examples
- How many days are there between January 1 and January 31? Set January 1 and January 31 as the start and end days and calculate. The result is 30 days, since January 1 isn't counted.
- How many days do we have left until the festival opening? Calculate using today's date and the event date. To count weekdays only, check the number of weeks displayed and subtract two days for each week.
- When will my visa expire? Enter your visa start date and the number of days. Set Add and click Calculate to see the end date.
- When did my fitness streak start? Enter today's date and your current streak in days. Set Subtract and click to calculate the start date.
Common mistakes
Many people expect January 1 to January 31 to be 31 days, but most date calculators exclude the start date, so the result is 30 days. Don't rely on this tool for critical calculations, since days can be calculated differently in some cases.
FAQs
- Does it count both ends or just one?
- The days-between count excludes the start date and is inclusive of the end date, so how many days from X to Y, for example, excludes X and includes Y.
- What about leap years?
- Leap years are handled automatically. A range that crosses February 29 in a leap year will count that day.
- Are weekends excluded?
- No, the count is calendar days. If you need only a certain number of days a week, look at the week total and subtract the off days for each week from the number of days. For example, to count the working days based on a 5-day week, subtract 2 days for each week in the total.
- What about times?
- The Hour Calculator works similarly to the Date Calculator but it counts hours, not whole days.
