Set up work and breaks with a simple study timer
This timer runs through a sequence of work and break intervals, with an alarm at the end of each session. Alternating between work sessions and planned breaks like this can help balance your energy and focus across longer tasks. The default is 30 minutes work / 10 minutes break across three rounds, but you can also pick a different template or create your own custom list: simply name your first session and length and click Add to add more. Use the up and down arrows to reorder entries.
Note: For critical timers, always check your device's sleep and sound settings before you start work, since the alert won't play if your device is asleep.
Your routine is saved in this browser
Your list of segments is saved in this browser, so it's there when you come back on this device. It does not sync to an account or across devices.
Why is a study timer better than a regular timer?
A regular timer just counts down once and stops. A study timer is basically a set of timers you can set to run in a chain to alternate between sessions. You don't need to stop, reset, or set a new timer at the end of each session, so you can stay focused on your work, task, revision, or writing.
Which study timer interval is best?
30 mins work / 10 mins break is a common ratio, but 50/10 and 90/15 are popular too. Try different ratios to see which is better for your focus and tasks. For example, detailed editing will be easier in longer blocks, but meetings or learning a new skill work best in shorter sessions.
Common study timer questions
- Will the chime play if I switch apps or tabs?
- Yes, as long as the browser tab stays open. The chime plays at each segment's end, in the foreground or background.
- Can I save a routine I built?
- Yes. The list of segments saves automatically in this browser, so you see the same list when you open the page again on this device.
- How long can a single segment be?
- 1 to 180 minutes. Most useful patterns sit between 5 and 90 minutes per block.
- Can I reorder segments after I add them?
- Yes. Use the up and down arrows on each segment to move it, and the new order saves immediately.
